How is it made?
Our plant-based 'chicken' shred is made right here in Australia. Our product is based on seitan, a meat alternative made using the protein in wheat that has been made for over 1,000 years. Wheat is naturally contains approximately 13% protein and 70% carbohydrates. As the carbohydrates are mostly water-soluble, they can be washed away. Using these simple principles, we can concentrate the naturally abundant plant-based protein into a product that before hydration is approximately 70% protein.
What's in it:
- 100% Australian wheat
- nutritional yeast for umami,
- soy sauce powder for depth of flavour
- corn flour to help with moisture absorption
- salt for taste
Our soy sauce powder is dried on a simple sugar (maltodextrin) and an inert mineral (silicon dioxide) that allows us to increase shelf life without chemical preservatives. If your powder sticks together, it's still good to eat; it just needs a little extra stirring.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is it made from GMO wheat?
No. In fact, none of our ingredients are genetically modified. Everything is non-GMO/GMO Free!
How long have you been operating for?
Planet Protein was established in May 2026, but we work with ingredient suppliers and contract manufacturers that have decades of experience producing exceptional quality products and ingredients for some of Australia's leading brands.
Is it made in Australia?
Yes. Our protein is made from 100% Australian wheat, and produced in batches in Western Sydney. Our flavours (roughly 30% of the contents of each packet) is blended by us, from mostly imported ingredients (If you know of Aussie growers of our flavour ingredients, let us know!)
Is it shelf stable?
Our product is designed to be shelf stable and long-lasting. Our multi-serve packs have a best-before of 6-months (as we only started in May 2026, we haven't been around long enough to validate that it can last longer) though all the ingredients are shelf stable for 12-months plus. To extend the shelf life of our individual packets, they are best stored in an airtight container. We use home compostable and recyclable packaging for our individual packets, which means the flavouring can stick together in the packet. It's still just a delicious, and will de-clump when added to hot-water.

Can I buy it in person?

Is it gluten-free?
No, our 'chicken' shred contains gluten, but is free of the preservatives, softeners, colours and other artificial nasties that some other glutinous products contain.
Is it TVP?
No. TVP is made from soy, whereas our 'chicken' shred is made from the protein in wheat. It's a plant-based shredded protein that can be used similarly to shredded chicken. It's made from the protein in wheat (essentially dehydrated seitan if your familiar with that). Wheat is normally thought of as a carbohydrate, but is actually 13% protein. If you remove the carbohydrates and starches like we do, you're left with something more like 80%+ protein. We then include flavourings that make it deliciously ready to eat (unlike other products like TVP and tofu).
