How we make it:
Our plant-based 'chicken' shred is made right here in Australia. Our product is based on seitan, a meat alternative made using the protein in wheat that has been made for over 1,000 years. Wheat is naturally contains approximately 13% protein and 70% carbohydrates. As the carbohydrates are mostly water-soluble, they can be washed away. Using these simple principles, we can concentrate the naturally abundant plant-based protein into a product that before hydration is approximately 70% protein.
What it's made of
- 100% Australian wheat
- nutritional yeast for umami,
- soy sauce powder for depth of flavour
- corn flour to help with moisture absorption
- salt for taste
Our soy sauce powder is dried on a simple sugar (maltodextrin) and an inert mineral (silicon dioxide) that allows us to increase shelf life without chemical preservatives. If your powder sticks together, it's still good to eat; it just needs a little extra stirring.

This stuff is amazing! Ive created 2 unique meals woth it so far and it is super easy to use and takes on the flavours of whatever you cook it with. It is nice to have another quick easy plant based high protein source to use in my arsenal for when I am sick of tofu or TVP. I love the ease after a busy day, not having to do that shopping late in the day run around and still being able to make a "good for me, good for the planet" meal. In less than 15 minutes tops I'm able to whip up something really satisfying and filling and generally without having to cook a thing. Girl dinner sorted! Super impressed with your protein. I was waiting for the weird taste that usually follows vegan chicken but there was nothing there. So easy to prepare and takes on any flavour. Great texture too. I made a “chicken” and herbed mayo salad sandwich, couldn’t tell the difference and I don’t get that chicken ick 😊🤩 can’t wait to try more recipes!

I would actually rate closer to 4.5 stars. I'm very fussy with flavours and textures. I was impressed with the texture of this product, I'd give it 8/10. I wasn't as impressed with the subtle umami flavour, I'd give it 6/10, but I prefer it over any other flavoured plant based proteins I've tried (apart from unhealthy deep fried ones). I'm also happy with the main packaging so far (I have yet to test the bags in my worm farm and other compost bins), the message with meal ideas was a nice touch, but not needed for me. For overall convenience 9/10. I will be purchasing again!

Overall it is quite convenient but expensive for what it offers. A bit too.much sodium, but that can be reduced if you use your own spice blend.

I wasn't sure what to expect from this product but I was really thrilled with the end result. It was exactly how described - ready in 5 mins, no cooking or added spices needed. The 100gm bag would have easily filled two sandwiches, even though it was only 1 serve, and it tasted great. The texture was great too. Very glad a bought a few 100gm bags as well are the large bag. 9/10. Highly recommend

Such an easy protein snack. Definitely added to the rotation of food staples. Keeping some hydrated in the fridge is a yummy addition to salads, curries and noodles to get that extra protein in. Also great to take camping as they are lightweight and minimal prep, such an easy addition to the outdoor adventure meals!

We took this on our recent camping trip this weekend for an easy meal prep and it was all we hoped it would be. Just add boiling water is exactly all it took. We added some yummy Mexican herbs and spices for robust flavour, popped into some wraps with salads and sauces and within 15 minutes of setting up camp we had dinner on the table and our bellies were full. Highly recommend. ( Also it took up such little space and super light, really appreciated the fully compostable packaging too ☺️)

Absolutely love this product. It comes in different sizes, has the flavouring in a seperate little bag so you a choose to use that flavour or go with your own creation. So easy to take on trips and tastes reliably good. Very versatile. I subscribed and use it often.

Please consider selling a variety of flavour options. The shred itself is pretty good, has a pleasant texture (maybe a little more fine than ideal but I also understand that's necessary for it to dehydrate right), but I've started just discarding the flavour packets because I really don't like the taste. I can't explain why, I like soy sauce and I like nutritional yeast but something about your mix just isn't doing it for me. I recently made nachos using the shred, but I flavoured it with my store-bought nutritional yeast and taco mix, that was divine. Might try vegetable stock next, or a Greek spice mix.
Other than that, it's pretty good! Value for money is great and its super simple to make. Happy to keep my subscription, but I will be binning the flavour packs.
You're right Willow, with a product this convenient and delicious, I also think it's a 3-star performance that we haven't launched more ways to enjoy the product. Good news, unflavoured is launching this Sunday, and new flavours are so close you can taste it (well, almost). Is it made from GMO wheat?
No. In fact, none of our ingredients are genetically modified. Everything is non-GMO/GMO Free!
How long have you been operating for?
Planet Protein was established in May 2026, but we work with ingredient suppliers and contract manufacturers that have decades of experience producing exceptional quality products and ingredients for some of Australia's leading brands.
Is it made in Australia?
Yes. Our protein is made from 100% Australian wheat, and produced in batches in Western Sydney. Our flavours (roughly 30% of the contents of each packet) is blended by us, from mostly imported ingredients (If you know of Aussie growers of our flavour ingredients, let us know!)
Is it shelf stable?
Our product is designed to be shelf stable and long-lasting. Our multi-serve packs have a best-before of 6-months (as we only started in May 2026, we haven't been around long enough to validate that it can last longer) though all the ingredients are shelf stable for 12-months plus. To extend the shelf life of our individual packets, they are best stored in an airtight container. We use home compostable and recyclable packaging for our individual packets, which means the flavouring can stick together in the packet. It's still just a delicious, and will de-clump when added to hot-water.

Can I buy it in person?

Is it gluten-free?
No, our 'chicken' shred contains gluten, but is free of the preservatives, softeners, colours and other artificial nasties that some other glutinous products contain.
Is it TVP?
No. TVP is made from soy, whereas our 'chicken' shred is made from the protein in wheat. It's a plant-based shredded protein that can be used similarly to shredded chicken. It's made from the protein in wheat (essentially dehydrated seitan if your familiar with that). Wheat is normally thought of as a carbohydrate, but is actually 13% protein. If you remove the carbohydrates and starches like we do, you're left with something more like 80%+ protein. We then include flavourings that make it deliciously ready to eat (unlike other products like TVP and tofu).
How can it be low-carb when it's made from wheat?
Wheat is naturally approximately 13% protein, and 70% carbohydrates. As the carbohydrates are mostly water-soluble, they can be washed away. This allows us to achieve super high protein levels in a product that's typically thought of as a carb
